During this week, children will go on adventures along the Nissequogue River, they will go on a stream trek to waterfalls and learn about animals and nature through guided exploration.

Ages 7 -12y

Time: 9am-3pm

Members $375  Non-Members $425 + There maybe an extra fee for some field trips (pay this week of program)

CHILDREN MUST BRING WATER SHOES AND SNEAKERS. CHILDREN WILL BE IN THE WATER EVERYDAY SO PLEASE PACK A CHANGE OF CLOTHING AND A TOWEL. CROC’S ARE NOT WATER SHOES AND WILL GET STUCK IN THE MUD AT THE RIVER.

We will go beyond the borders of Sweetbriar to explore new frontiers. Kayak the Nissequogue, hike the greenbelt trail and explore the forests, wetlands & beaches of Long Island. An overnight camp out with barbecue, campfire, and night hike brings the week to a close.

Some field trips will incur an additional charge

Join us for an exciting week at the Nature Center, where teens aged 13-16 will dive into the world of wildlife rehabilitation, animal care, and animal education! This hands-on program blends animal care with learning how to teach natural science education to others. Participants will practice handling mammals like rabbits and hedgehogs while developing skills in educating others about their care. They'll also learn to teach about and care for reptiles, amphibians, and birds, including raptors. Each day features interactive games, outdoor adventures, and opportunities to assist in real wildlife and domestic animal care. Guided by Sweetbriar’s experienced staff, teens will gain valuable skills in both animal care and wildlife education, while connecting with nature and building confidence in presenting scientific knowledge to others.

 

Ages: 13-16

Time: 9:00am- 3:00pm

We offer wildlife rehabilitation at our nature center and take care of injured, sick, and orphaned animals. In this presentation participants will meet some of our resident non-releasable animals, find out their stories, and learn what you can do to help wildlife in our area. This is a great introduction to local wildlife issues. If you’re interested in becoming a rehabber this a good first step.

Owl Prowl Friday 7/11

Visit Sweetbriar to meet and learn about some of our resident owls. We will embark on a walk into the darkness to enjoy the night and call some owls. Meet behind the main house and check in.   Wear bug spray and bring a flashlight just in case.


*Must have tickets to attend this event. Unfortunately, no walk ins permitted for this event*

Open to families with children ages 5y and up

$20.00 pp





Tips for attending an Owl Prowl:

1) Arrive at 62 Eckernkamp Dr, Smithtown, NY 11787 ** Gate will open between 7:30pm-7:45pm**

2) Proceed to park in either the roundabout in front of the house or make a left when entering the facility and park in the far-left parking lot

3) Walk up to the house's main door and then turn right and follow the sidewalk pathway to the back of the house. You will arrive at the back deck of the house surrounded by benches

4) Owl Prowl hosts will greet you at the backdoor to check-in

5) Event will proceed outside unless other circumstances arise

Reconnecting Rivers - Reconnecting Screening and Q&A

Join us for an educational event about the Nissequogue River and Stump Pond. We will have a Q&A regarding the dam, environmental impacts and more. There is an optional hike down to the river and springs. Taking place in the Barn at Sweetbriar.

Park in either parking lot and follow the gravel road next to the volunteer garden. It’s about a 4-minute walk.
