Spring 2008

Photography Club Meetings
The Sweetbriar Nature Photography club meets on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m. Visitors are always welcome. Activities include guest speakers, entertaining slide shows, instructional programs, photo competitions, field trips and more. Our club is a member of the Photographic Federation of Long Island.

Theatrical Benefit
Since the first theatrical benefit was such a big success, Eric Young's theater group, The Second Chance Players, will be performing the beloved comedy The Man Who Came To Dinner by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The funds generated Friday night will go to support our mission of Wildlife Rehabilitation and Nature Education. Please call well in advance to reserve tickets. Tickets at the door the night of the show will be limited.

Fee: $15/ticket
*If you cannot come on Friday, please, come and see the show on Saturday, April 19. Proceeds for this show will help support the Smithtown Historical Society.

Jim Fowler / Wolf Conservation Society: AtkaWildlife and Craft Fair
Come one, come all to Sweetbriar for a day of fun and education. Along with the usual exciting entertainment, crafts, games, face painting, animal shows, and vendors, our guest speaker will be Jim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha and Animal Planet. Also, we will host a visit from the Wolf Conservation Center and their wolf ambassador, Atka. Presentation times will be added by June 1, 2008. Please check back soon.

Sweetbriar's Seasonal Celebrations

Spring Baby Shower
You are cordially invited to attend a baby shower to celebrate the coming of spring and to prepare our Rehabilitation Center for the many baby orphaned animals this season brings to us. Children will enjoy meeting some our animals, listen to some wonderful about wildlife babies, and indulge in some light refreshments within a fun filled baby shower theme.
Date: Sunday, March 30, 1-3pm
Ages: All ages welcome
Fee: Donation of one or more items from our gift registry or $5/person
(Since this is a fundraiser for our rehabilitating animals there is no discount for members)

Earth Day Everyday
Celebrate the wonders of the natural world and living things that share the planet with us.Children will meet resident animals, enjoy the natural world through their senses, and go on a scavenger hunt to find out some of the things they can do to help the natural world.Come away with a free drink container to reduce what you throw away.
Date: Saturday, April 19, 1-3pm
Ages: 5 and up
Fee: $6/child for members, $8/child for non-members

Wind Riders
Ride the June breezes along with some of the most magnificent animals in the world; birds of prey. Visit the Smithtown library and meet a falcon, a hawk, and an owl close up and discover some of the wondrous adaptations of these magnificent birds. Then come to Sweetbriar near the summer solstice and go on a scavenger hunt to see more of our birds of prey. Create a flying bird of prey and watch it soar as the sun goes down on one of the longest days of the year.

Young People and Art
Fall and Winter Art Classes

The Judith Collester Art Center will continue to run its wonderful art program. The spring series of classes will once again be taught by Larissa Grass, who has been an invaluable addition to the art center. The work created by the students in her classes has been outstanding. If your child has an interest in art, please think about enrolling him or her in this class.
Saturdays – 10am to Noon, ages 9 to 13
Fee: $28 for each 2-hour session

Holiday Discovery Camp
Sweetbriar is presenting our exciting discovery days during holiday vacation. Each day will focus on a different natural science theme. The days will be filled with participatory learning activities, interaction with live animals, games, stories, and more.
Dates: Monday through Friday, February 19 through 23
Monday through Wednesday, March 17-19 & Monday and Tuesday, March 24, 25
Monday through Friday, April 21-25
Time: 9am to 3pm
Ages: 5-7, 8-11
Fee: $50/day for members, $60/day for non-members
$220/week for members, $250/week for non-members
A 10% discount for early registration before January 29 for Winter Camp and before March 1 & April 1 for Spring Camps
Sibling discount and aftercare available.

Natural Wonders for Pre-school
Introduce the wonders of the natural world to your child. Through stories, crafts, hands-on activities, and live animals, a Sweetbriar educator will make nature come alive for your pre-schooler.
Dates: Tuesdays – January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12, 26, March 4, 11, 18
Thursdays - January 10, 17, 24, 31, February 7, 14, 28, March 6, 13, 20
Time: 9:30am to Noon
Ages: 4 year olds
Fee: $200/child for ten sessions, $25/session
